"Will a child be taken away from the family

if someone reports abuse?"

Many people hesitate to report the incident because they fear a child will be immediately removed from their family.

In most cases, that is not what happens.

When a report is made, the first step is to assess the child's safety and understand the family's situation. Child Protection Practitioners gather information, evaluate the level of risk, and determine what support the child and family need.

If the child can remain safely at home, the priority is to strengthen the family. This may include counseling, parenting support, follow-up services, and connecting the family with community resources to create a safer environment for the child.

Only when a child is at serious and ongoing risk, and their safety cannot be ensured at home, may temporary separation be considered as a protective measure. The goal is always to keep the child safe - not to separate families unnecessarily.

At CPCR, we listen, assess each situation carefully, provide counseling, and work with concerned agencies to ensure every child are protected on one guiding principle - the best interests of the child.

Under Section 29 of Thailand's Child Protection Act B.E. 2546 (2003)anyone who encounters a child in need of welfare assistance or safety protection must provide basic assistance and immediately notify a police officer, an administrative official, a competent official from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, or someone else responsible for the child's safety.

If you suspect a child is experiencing violence, neglect, or inadequate care, reporting your concern can be the first step toward help - not necessarily the first step toward separating a child from their family. It gives professionals the opportunity to assess the situation and provide the support the child and family need before the problem becomes more serious.

If you are concerned about a child, you can seek help or report your concerns through:

  • 📞 Ministry of Social Development and Human Security Hotline OSCC 1300 (24 hours)
  • 👮 Local police station
  • 🏛️ The Shelter for Children and Families in your province
  • 🤝 the Center for the Protection of Children’s Rights Foundation (CPCR) for consultation and assistance coordination

One report can make a life-changing difference.

It may be the first step toward helping a child grow up safely within a stronger, more supportive family.
